Aguascalientes is located in north central Mexico and is part of the macro region known as Bajío.
It is a landlocked state, bordering Zacatecas to the north, Jalisco to the south, and San Luis Potosí and Nayarit to the east and west, respectively.
Its name comes from the hot springs discovered in the state by its founders.
It covers 0.3% of the surface area of the country.
Its capital is the city of Aguascalientes. The second most populated city in the state is Jesús María, which together with San Francisco de los Romo constitute the metropolitan zone of Aguascalientes.
It is the fourth most important city in Mexico and ranks eighth in the Human Development Index.
