Frankfurt

Frankfurt
  • Frankfurt is the most populated city of the state of Hesse in Germany. With almost 680,000 inhabitants (2,500,000 according to Eurostat), it is the fifth largest city in the country (behind Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Cologne). Although the administrative capital of Hesse is Wiesbaden, Frankfurt has greater historic and economic importance.
  • Frankfurt is an important European economic and financial center (sometimes unofficially called the economic and financial capital of the European Union). The city is home to the European Central Bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and the Messe Frankfurt. The latter is the site of major exhibitions, fairs, and international shows: the Frankfurt Motor Show, the biggest of its kind, and the Book Fair, the most important in the world.
  • Due to its central location Frankfurt is a major European transport hub. This is evidenced by the facilities of the Frankfurt Airport, Frankfurt Central Station, and the densest autobahn interchange in the world. The city reached 100,000 inhabitants for the first time in 1875; in 1928 it reached half a million. In regions closest to Frankfurt there are currently close to 1,800,000 inhabitants; in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Metropolitan Region 5,800,000.
  • One of Frankfurt's features is the concentration of tall buildings in the city center, which draw a distinctive profile, known locally as the Frankfurter Skyline. These skyscrapers are among the tallest buildings in Europe.
