Houston

Houston
  • Houston, a city located in the counties of Harris, Montgomery, and Fort Bend, is the fourth most populous city in the United States and the biggest in Texas.
  • The city was established on June 5, 1837 and received its name from the former president of the Republic of Texas, General Sam Houston, who commanded at the Battle of San Jacinto. The conflict took place 40 km east of where the city was established.
  • The growing port and railroad industry, combined with the discovery of oil in 1901, has caused continuous and sudden population increases in the city.
  • In the mid-20th century, Houston became the site of the Texas Medical Center—the largest concentration of research and health institutions in the world—and NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, where the Mission Control Center is located.
  • Ranked as a beta global city, Houston's economy has a broad industrial base in energy, manufacturing, aviation, transport, health, and is an important center for the creation of oilfield equipment. Only New York can boast more Fortune 500 company headquarters within the city limits.
