Santiago, also called Santiago de Chile, is the capital of Chile.
It is the country's main urban center and its metropolitan area is known as Greater Santiago.
It is also the capital of the Santiago Metropolitan Region.
The city houses the main administrative, commercial, cultural, financial, and government bodies of the country, with the exception of the National congress, the Chilean Navy, the National Customs Service, the National Fishing Service, and the National Council for Culture and the Arts, located in Valparaiso. It is also the headquarters of the CEPAL.
Although generally conceived as a single great city, Santiago does not consist of a sole administrative unit, but forms part of 37 communes of which 26 are completely within its urban radius and eleven are partly outside.
