  • Tuxtla Gutiérrez is the capital of the state of Chiapas, the municipal seat and largest urban center in the state with a population of 553,374 inhabitants (INEGI, 2010). It is also the center of the metropolitan area of Tuxtla which has been defined as the integration of the municipalities Chiapa de Corzo, Berriozábal, San Fernando, Suchiapa, Ocozocoautla, and Osumacinta.
  • Its urban growth and economic development has accelerated since the administrative decentralization of government, the arrival of national and foreign capital which attracts investment to the city and increase of economic support for state development.
  • In 2007, it was declared one of the best cities in which to live and invest, and currently has sustainable and clean city certification (2009) and safe community certification (2011); it ranks third on the list of safe communities in Latin America and is the first in Mexico to receive the certification; it is also among eight cities of the future worldwide.
