Xalapa-Enríquez, a city popularly known as Xalapa or Jalapa, is the seat of the municipality of the same name and capital of the state of Veracruz. It is known colloquially as "the Athens of Veracruz" and "the city of flowers".
Veracruz has three commercial seaports and five coastal ports which move 30% of the country's sea freight and 30% of domestic container freight.
Veracruz is the nation's leader in pineapple, chayote squash, manila mango, sugarcane, Valencia orange, papaya, and Persian lime production, and in wahoo, silver mullet, oyster, trout, sawfish, and mackerel capture.
The importance of Veracruz industry is reflected in the share of national production in certain sectors, some of which it leads; the majority of domestic sugar, petrochemical, agrochemical, and steel pipe production comes from Veracruz.
