Biodiversity
Only twelve countries in the world are considered mega-diverse and together they house between 60 and 70 percent of the planet’s total biodiversity. Mexico is one of them. Thanks to its latitude and its topography, the country has a great diversity of climates: from hot, with annual average temperatures of more than 26°C; to cold, with temperatures lower than 10°C; However, 93% of the national territory fluctuates between temperatures of 10°C to 26°C. This constitutes an optimal atmosphere for business. Due to its geographical situation, shape, climate, orography and geology, Mexico shows a great diversity of ecological conditions unique in the world; these conditions have resulted in a great richness of soils, abundance of resources and diversity of ecosystems. There are 14,000 lakes (inland bodies of water) in the country, most of which are located in the center-west zone, which includes the states of Jalisco and Michoacán, followed by the center-south and northern regions. For the government of Mexico the need to take action aimed at halting and reversing the degradation of ecosystems and making efficient use of natural resources is a matter of urgency. During the current administration 8 Protected Natural Areas (PNA) have been decreed, covering an area of more than one million hectares. Thanks to this, Mexico has 166 PNAs that represent more than 23.1 million hectares (around 12% of the national territory). Mexico is also working on a Special Climate Change Program (PECC) into which action lines, policies and strategies are being incorporated in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change on the part of the private and social sectors. Furthermore, one of the present administration’s concerns is improving the country’s competitiveness. In recent years the government has modernized and streamlined the obtaining of authorizations, licenses, permits, concessions, presentation of reports and notices electronically, among the most important being the Annual Operation Certificate and the Phytosanitary Import Certificate.
