Mexico boasts a large number of companies dedicated to providing cultural, audiovisual and entertainment services, which together comprise the copyright-protected industries. In 2006, the market for television content distribution was equivalent to 167 billion dollars. MIPTV estimates that in 2011 this will reach 251 billion dollars. Meanwhile, the advertising market was estimated to be worth 479 billion dollars in 2008, of which 123 billion dollars corresponded to television advertising.

According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) for at least the past three decades culture has become more closely linked to the dynamics of social communication media. Furthermore, the culture industry is becoming a strategic sector for competitiveness, employment, consensus-building, how politics is done, and the circulation of information and knowledge. Hence its importance as an industry. This ever-increasing power of the culture industry is closely linked to its own diversification. At the same time, the strategic contribution these industries make to promoting the image of Mexico abroad should be highlighted.
