Electronics
The electronics industry produces audio, video, computer and telecommunications equipment, along with commercial, office and electro-medical equipment and electronic components. The electronics industry is the country’s main productive activity for exports, representing 20 percent of total exports in 2007. Mexico possesses 690 industrial plants which directly generated over 315,000 jobs in the same year. The greatest proportion of manufactured goods comprise televisions, computer equipment and cellphones. The electronics industry in Mexico is principally made up of end-product assembly companies, requiring imports of raw materials. Between 2000 and 2007, foreign investment in this industry rose to 3,524 million dollars, most of which was directed towards the production of high-tech televisions, TV decoders and cellphones. Mexican exports in 2007 were worth 112.8 million dollars, while imports rose to 115 million dollars.
