This strategic industry comprises manufacturing activities related to pharmaceutical products, essential oils, perfumery and cosmetics, cleaning products and medical equipment. Mexico’s role in this industry is of great importance, as it is the fifth largest exporter of medical equipment in the world and the principal supplier to the United States. Meanwhile, Mexico is the second largest market for medical appliances in Latin America, after Brazil. Some 200 pharmaceutical companies operate here, employing 40,000 people, while there are a further 130 businesses specializing in the manufacture, repair or assembly of medical appliances. In 2007, the value of the pharmaceutical industry’s output reached 9.2 billion dollars, 6 percent more than the value attained in 2006. Meanwhile, Mexican exports of medical equipment increased by 12 percent in 2008, to 5,275 million dollars.
